Breast Reconstruction Surgery Information
What is Breast Reconstruction?
It is a surgery for women who have had a breast removed during a full or partial mastectomy. Breast reconstruction surgery seeks to rebuild the breast and restore it to approximately the same shape, size and appearance as it was before. During this procedure, the nipple and areola (darker area around the nipple) can also be restored. And, about half of all breast reconstruction surgeries involve breast implants. Although what was lost cannot fully be restored, the surgery can help a woman regain her feelings of femininity and decrease self-consciousness. Breast reconstruction is not the same as breast lift or breast augmentation, but in some cases they can be performed together.
Breast reconstruction is a surgery where the goal is to reshape or restore the breast to a normal shape, size and appearance. This surgery is mainly performed after a mastectomy. A mastectomy is the surgical removal of the whole breast, typically to rid the body of cancer. This is not the same as breast lift or breast augmentation, but in some cases they can be performed in conjunction.
As results of the surgery the patient will have breast that match their body frame and are in harmony with their overall look. The patient will not experience the pain and discomfort from the loss of a breast; and may experience an increase and self-esteem as their breasts do not interfere with their normal life anymore in a negative way.
It gives women who had suffered from cancer or other conditions and who have lost one or both breast; the opportunity to reconstruct not only their breast but their life.
Losing a breast can be a very painful situation for a woman, not only physically but emotionally. A breast reconstruction can help the patient gain their life back. By improving a patients breast not only their does their appearance improve but also their self-confidence and quality of life.
